The Key to Success is to Duplicate ...
While prospecting for people to join your business, you want to make your steps easy to duplicate.
Your prospects are watching what you do and they’re wondering two things: “Can I do this?”, and “Will it work for me?” It is your goal to make what you’re doing to work your business simple enough that even an eight-year old can explain it. The idea is to have your prospects watching you and thinking “I can do that… and I can even do it better!”
What do You Want to Duplicate?
You want to become what you want to duplicate in your business. If you want to recruit successful people into your business, then you’ll want to be that successful person. If you want to recruit business builders, than you want to be that business builder. Sometimes, it’s better to sell products to the people who don’t want to actually work a business. That way it can be a win-win for both of you. If they really don’t want to work a business, you can offer them your product. They will be happy with the product and you’ll benefit from the sales volume in your business. This will help you to not duplicate that person who doesn’t want to work.
Remember you set the pace for your team. If you sponsor 10 people per month, your team will likely sponsor 5. If you sponsor 5, your team will likely sponsor 3. So set the pace, work your business, and do the best you can. Your team will follow your lead and duplicate what you do. Spend your time prospecting and sponsoring. Don’t spend as much time motivating and training. Of course training is important. Your new team member needs to know what to do. But teach them and then send them off to build their business while you continue to build yours.
Most companies already have a system in place to help you prospect for team members and customers. Your job is to duplicate the system that is laid out for you. Keep the steps simple and teach those simple steps to your team.
The easier it is to follow, the more likely your team will duplicate your steps.
Having a Hard Time Helping Your Avon Team be Successful?
This is a problem that EVERY Avon Representative deals with as their team grows.
Sometimes I feel guilty when my team members aren’t successful. I’ve tried to develop more training, schedule more meetings, and come up with more tools to help them sell Avon and make money, and to achieve the success they tell me they want.
But no matter what I do for them, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t make any difference how much I try to help my team; those who are getting results will continue to do so, while those who aren’t will generally stay where they are.
The only thing you can do that will truly help your Avon business and your team members is to lead by example. Just do the things that you need to personally do on a daily basis to build your business – Advertising, Prospecting, Follow-up, and New Rep orientation. Spend your time one-on-one with your producers, and that’s it.
Like Jim Rohn said, you have to accept the people in your business for what they are. You can’t ask a ten percenter to become a 90 percenter. Just as it is a sorting game to find new reps, it is also a sorting game to find the reps that will work and be successful once they sign up to sell Avon.
The sad truth is that 90% of those who start an Avon business aren’t really serious about becoming self-employed. They are just looking to “buy some hope”, so they can quiet the voices of discontent in their heads. Soon enough they will come up with an excuse why this business is not for them and they’ll quit. There’s nothing you can do about it, so don’t spend your time and energy trying to change it.
Build YOUR business. Lead by example, and the right one’s (the few), will follow you. Put your blinders on to everything and everyone else. Your job is to empower others and to help them be successful in their home business – not to do the business for them. So spend your time bringing in many people into your business. If you’re dealing with thousands of people on your team, you won’t even notice the whiners and quitters.
As I’m sure you’ve heard many times, SWSWSW – Some will, some won’t… so what – Next! This applies to your team members as well as to your potential recruits. You have a great opportunity to offer them. If they won’t take advantage of that… and 95% of them won’t… it’s not your job to force them.
Author H. Jackson Brown, Jr. quipped, “Talent without discipline is like an octopus on roller skates. There’s plenty of movement, but you never know if it’s going to be forward, backward, or sideways.” If you know you have talent, and you have seen a lot of motion – but little concrete results – you may lack self-discipline.
Sort out your priorities. Think about which two or three areas of life are most important to you. Write them down, along with the disciplines that you must develop to keep growing and improving in those areas. Develop a plan to make the disciplines a daily or weekly part of your life.
List the reasons. Take the time to write out the benefits of practicing the disciplines you have just listed. Then post the benefits someplace where you will see them daily. On the days when you do not want to follow through, re-read your list.
Get rid of excuses. Write down every reason why you might not be able to follow through with your disciplines. Read through them. You need to dismiss them as the excuses they are. Even if a reason seems legitimate, find a solution to overcome it. Do not leave yourself any reasons to quit. Remember, only in the moment of discipline do you have the power to achieve your dreams.
A nursery in Canada displays this sign on its wall: “The best time to plant a tree is twenty-five years ago … The second best time is today.” Plant the tree of self-discipline in your life today.
Begin a routine of regularly scheduled actions of self-discipline.

Leadership Business Tools
In order to achieve success in this business, you need tools to help you stay on top of things as well as to automate as much as possible to give you time to talk to and connect with people.
The first thing you need is a good Contact Manager.
Without a good system for tracking your contacts and helping you follow up with your leads, it doesn’t matter how many leads you have because most of them will slip through the cracks and never go anywhere. Your good tracking system is key to building relationships and increasing both sales and retention! Let’s face it, no matter how amazing our product is, or how great our compensation plan is, many people are not going to buy our products or sign up to sell Avon the first time you talk to them. Ultimately you want to stay with your prospect until you get either a Yes or a No. That could take days or even months. Having a plan in place detailing how you’re going to follow-up and keep track of where everyone is in your plan will have a huge impact on your business.
Your Contact Manager will also help you offer amazing support to your downline. You will know at a glance who needs a 48 hr follow-up call, who needs a T-2 training, etc., and it will keep a history of discussions, e-mails, letters, etc. you’ve had with the contact.
The system I use is called KeepMore.net. They have a free trial period so you can check it out with no obligation.
KeepMore.net is an online service that is easy to use and can be accessed from any computer, even when I’m away from my computer. This system ensures that I never have a Lead or a downline member fall through the cracks and that I’m on top of my business at all times.
And You Need Some Business Cards
You only get one chance to make a great first impression, so make the most of it with high-quality, full-color premium business cards. There are many places where you can get quality business cards, but I’ve found exactly what I need at Vista Print. They offer free cards featuring a wide variety of templates to choose from. All you have to pay for is shipping. They also have a larger selection of inexpensive premium cards to choose from. I’ve used them many times and have always loved the cards I received.
I am a firm believer that there are three basic steps to success in your Avon business:
- You need to prospect for new customers and recruits
- You need to make sure every customer receives a new brochure every campaign
- You need to follow-up with every customer every campaign
As Richard and I were trying to grow our business, we kept coming up against roadblocks. We were finding that the things we needed to do for our business were taking all our available time. The time we had to spend on our business was very limited and so we needed to get creative to free up as much time as possible.
I realized I was spending all my time every campaign delivering the new brochure and calling on current customers. While those are crucial steps, it didn’t give me any time to grow my business by prospecting and talking to new people… and so Ie found a few tools to help out.
Bulk Mail is a fairly simple way to make sure every customer gets a brochure every campaign. Another advantage to mailing brochures is that people are more likely to browse through a brochure that came into their house via the mail than one left on their doorstep. Check with your Post Office, but the costs to get started are somewhere in the range of $185/year plus a one-time charge of $185 for the right to print your indicia (permit info). Having the bulk mail permit brings your cost to mail a brochure down to around 55 cents as compared to roughly $2.00 if you mailed it via regular mail. There are requirements however; you need 200 identical pieces or 50 pounds before you can bulk mail.
If you are ready to get started, but not quite at that level yet, there is a company called Consultant Depot who will mail your brochures for you. The cost is a little higher per brochure, but it includes the cost of the brochure and the postage for much less than you can do it yourself by regular mail, and you don’t have to worry about the yearly Bulk Mail permit charges. You can find Consultant Depot by Clicking Here. I have used them a few times and I do know a lot of Reps who love their service.
Another area that was taking a lot of my time was making follow-up phone calls to my customers every campaign. Making follow-up phone calls is probably one of the most important things you can do to increase your sales. People are busy. They want to purchase Avon products from you – they look at the brochure and even mark the pages… but then they forget to call you. If you call them, you’ll most likely get an order. If you don’t, eventually that brochure will go in the trash.
I found a service called Voice Shot – Click Here for Voice Shot. This service lets me call an 800 number to record my message. Then I upload my list of phone numbers to their website and setup a campaign where every one of my phone numbers will be called by their computer and my message will be played when the customer answers the phone. I keep my message very friendly and conversational. My customers love the reminder and tell me so all the time! My sales always triple and quadruple within 2-3 days of the phone calls. This amazing service only costs about 12 cents per call, leaving you time to go out and get new customers!
The Voice Shot service is also a great way to stay in touch with my team. When I have an important announcement, this is the service I use to get the word out to everyone!
One word of caution: If you are worried that a phone message will hurt the relationship part of the business, I want to tell you it really doesn’t. You will still be calling your customer to confirm her order, and you will still be making deliveries. These are great opportunities to work on the relationship part of the business. Most customers will perceive your phone reminder messages as just good customer service.
Greeting Cards and Post Cards
Another way I stay in touch with my customers and downline members is with the use of “snail-mail” Cards and Post Cards. People are receiving so much e-mail and e-cards these days that electronic mail barely gets noticed, but when they get a physical card in their mailbox, it really catches their attention!
If you’ve been keeping good notes in your contact manager, it’s easy to think of things to include in your cards. Here are just a few examples:
- Post Cards to your Top 10 in Sales

- Recognize an accomplishment
- Birthdays & Anniversaries
- Get Well
- Tell them you are thinking about them
- Tell them you appreciate them
- Announce a special
- Show your support
I’ve discovered the most Amazing Way to send Greeting Cards and Post Cards for 1/3 the cost. You can send one card, or you can create a campaign or series of cards that will go out at set intervals without you having to do anything more. The cards are REAL and can be printed in your own handwriting and include your photos. Each card can be individualized and custom made for each person you want to send a card to. SendOutCards then prints the card, puts it in an envelope, adds a stamp, and mails the card for you. They even offer gifts and gift cards

As you’re appointing Representatives online, you’ll need a way to train them. I LOVE GoToMeeting for this. It allows you to use Avon’s training materials and walk through them as though you were right there with the new Representative. You can also help them with their first order, and even let them use your mouse as you walk them through the order form. You can try it for FREE for 30 days to see if it will work for you.
How do I Motivate my Team?
Over the years I’ve tried many ways to motivate my team. From offering incentives to working like crazy to get as many team members to attend various motivational speakers and events! No matter what I do, I can’t seem to motivate my team.
It was a hard lesson for me to learn (and sometimes still is), but the truth is, I can’t motivate anyone. All this time, I’ve tried to hold team members’ hands, coach them along, and get them to see that if they put forth the effort now, it would pay off in the long run. I take team members out with me and teach them to talk to people and prospect for both customers and recruits. And most of the time they do great! They do a wonderful job! But if I’m not there with them, they just don’t do it on their own.
These self-motivation skills should have been learned a long time ago. I am not their mother and it is not my responsibility to teach them to be responsible for themselves and their own actions. So what do I do?
Well, first off quit trying to get them to do something they don’t want to do. Jim Rohn talked a lot about this. He said you keep sowing the seed. The birds will get some of the seed, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Some of the seed will fall on hard ground and won’t be able to take root, and the sun will kill them off. Some will start growing and will get choked off by weeds. Again there’s nothing you can do about it. But some of the seed will land on good ground and will flourish.
But he also talked about how some people will give their business 20% of their effort, and you can’t do anything about that either. There’s nothing you can do to get them to give 100% of their effort. Some will do 50%, some 80% and a very small percentage will give 100%. So we need to appreciate our team members for what they give and not expect them to give more.
But there are people out there who don’t need to be motivated. They have no problem motivating themselves. These people are often referred to as “self-starters” and they are out there. Maybe we haven’t found them yet, or maybe we’ve found a few. The longer we’re in the game, the more we’ll find. But I believe it is totally possible to attract these types of people to us.
It’s all about posture. When you position yourself as someone who’s attractive to work with, and you develop a reputation of being a winner, these types of people will start coming to you. Why? Because people who are driven to succeed and who have a track record of getting things done want to work with people who know what they’re doing. They will actively seek them out! Even if you haven’t become successful yet, people sense those skills in you and will see you as a leader.
I see this all the time in my Avon business and even with myself when I first started Leadership. We know it takes 5+ people on our team (along with the sales requirements) to achieve the title of Unit Leader. But for most people, having 5 Representatives doesn’t quite cut it. Most of the time it takes 7-8 before you can reach the sales goals to achieve the title. I believe it’s because when we’re new to Leadership, we haven’t acquired the posture yet. We may be timid, or we may revert to almost begging to get the new Representative signed up, and we’ll take anyone who we can convince to join us. Therefore we’re attracting those types of people who respond to those types of tactics.
After we get 10-15 Reps on our team, we’re starting to feel a little more confident, and so we start attracting a higher quality of person to our team. (Please note, I mean no disrespect by the term quality – I merely mean that our opportunity may be better suited for this person at this exact time).
After you have several hundred Reps on your team, your posture is totally different again. Now, of course you want to help everyone and offer them the chance to have their own business which could totally change their life, but it’s really not an issue to you whether they decide to join or not. If they’re not interested, you’d rather they just told you so to save you from wasting your time. You are looking for quality rather than quantity at this point.
The great thing is that you don’t have to wait until after you become successful to be called an expert. The fastest way to become successful is to position yourself as an expert. Look for those who already have that internal motivation. No matter how persuasive or convincing you are, trying to sell your opportunity to people who aren’t interested can never compare to the results you’ll get by offering it to people who are already looking!
Start by not chasing down your prospect. The chasing won’t end after they’re signed up. If that’s how you got them to join your team, you’ll have to chase them to place their order every campaign, you’ll have to chase them to attend the meetings, etc. When you find the ones who are already motivated, you won’t be able to keep them away from the meetings.
So keep offering your opportunity to everyone you meet. Don’t prejudge anyone because you don’t really know until you work with them, and it really is sort of a “numbers game”. But spend your time and energy on those who deserve it. Once you find those qualified Representatives, I bet you’ll find that they don’t even need your time. You’ll call them up and see what help they need, and they’ll tell you, “Thanks but I already have it handled”.
